The bluefin tuna’s battle

The majestic – and endangered – bluefin tuna has found a friend in the US government, who are now supporting a ban on the international trade in Atlantic bluefin tuna, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Said Greenpeace’s John Hocevar: ”Bluefin tuna have been mismanaged to the brink of extinction and a ban on international trade is critical to the recovery of the species.”

In related news, Greenpeace have slammed companies like John West and Sirena, for selling “tuna that has been fished unsustainably”, says the Herald.

“The canned tuna labels don’t identify the tuna species, so consumers aren’t aware of the fact that they’re eating an overfished species,” Greenpeace Australia’s Genevieve Quirk is quoted as saying on smh.com.au.
